Type of Farm: Sheep (and a few cattle)

1. Describe yourself in a few sentences:

Many would describe me as quite a typical New England sheep farmer. I would like to correct the record and state that I would describe myself as an agricultural enthusiast with a penchant for the ‘creative’. I really quite enjoy the outdoors and having my workplace in the paddocks. In fact as I write this on my computer, I am itching to get out and check on my lambing ewes.

2. List five things that make you unique:

As stated above, I have a ﬂair for the creative. I guess my uniqueness shines brightest through this. How many farmers out there have a degree in drama, as well as co-own a record label, Dj, produce music and dabble in visual arts through the medium of sheep?

3. What are your interests?

I’m going to have a guess here and say I think you might already have a fair idea as to what my interests include. So to save a bit of time I have dot pointed these. Hopefully they get extrapolated later on in this questionnaire. If they aren’t then perhaps we can have a chinwag about anything that might intrigue you.

4. What is your favourite music / musician / band?

Music is an extremely large part of who I am and it would be unfair to distill favourites down to just one. Electronic music as a whole brings me great joy. Every time I hear a track from Daft Punk, Justice or any French electronic house producer I stop what I am up to and have a boogie. I have travelled quite a bit to see Justice live, such is my fandom. In saying that I enjoy almost every other genre of music. As I write this, ‘My Silver Lining’ by First Aid Kit is playing and it is a belter of a track. Actually I might try and remix in due course.

5. What is your favourite movie and why?

Hot Rod.

I wouldn’t describe it as the greatest movie of all time nor are the performances particularly special. However it is jam-packed with really silly one-liners and a beautiful little story arc around a guy chasing his dreams, no matter how ridiculous. This movie is fun and you don’t have to think deeply, or engage the brain in any way. Just sit back, laugh and feel good.

Right, I am going to check on some ewes and lambs. I shall ruminate on the next couple of questions whilst doing so.

6. What sort of partner are you looking for?

If you were interested, the ewes and lambs are OK. Safe and sound. Looks like there could be quite a large crop of lambs this year also. Positive signs.

Back to the questions…

To put it simply, I am looking for a partner that I am emotionally, intellectually and physically attracted to. I am looking for a partner that is quite settled and comfortable with who she is. Someone who is passionate about her path and choices that she has made. Make no mistake, I am not looking for a farm-hand or labour. It would be nice if my partner had an interest in the farm, and was willing and able to be a team-mate around these parts on occasion. Equally so I want to be able to engage and help her out in her profession or interests. But it’s not a deal breaker. I am looking for someone who I can learn from. That can be anything also… learning fashion trends or how to insert a catheter into a goat.

7. What age partner are you looking for?

27-35

8. What values are you looking for in a partner?

I’m looking for a woman who is independent, funny, creative. Someone who is open and can clearly communicate what they are thinking and feeling. Someone who is grounded but not rigid. What I mean by this is that I am looking for someone who isn’t away with the fairies but likes to visit them on occasion. I’m not sure if these are values, but a woman who has dreams and aspirations is something quite alluring.

9. What is really important to you in a relationship?

It might sound cliched, however communication and expression are really quite important. Yes, I can argue that raw unbridled passion and intellectual stimulation are magnificently important in a relationship. What good are those qualities if you can’t clearly communicate them.

Relationships are fundamentally teams. Again, communication is critical if this team is going to be able to conquer a little slice of the world… if not all of it.

– Me: “Honey, do you know where the nuclear codes are?”

-You: “Yes Babe, they are on the side of the fridge underneath the WIFI Password”

– Me: “Yep, you’re right… there they are. Thank you for communicating this. I had completely forgotten and now we can go forth and conquer the world. Love you.

– You: “That’s ok. Love you also. Before we do that, would you like to watch an episode of Ted Lasso?”

– Me: “That is a sensational idea. I’ll make some popcorn”

-You: “Sweet, Ill grab a blanket’

– Me: “What a great team we make”

(The happy couple proceed to watch the program and snuggle)

* PLEASE NOTE: Script-writing isn’t one of my strongest attributes/interests. I wanted to make a point about communication and teamwork. After reading back, I have seemingly failed. I do enjoy Ted Lasso though.

10. How would you describe yourself in a relationship?

I have done a spot of reading about the 5 diﬀerent love languages and have attempted to self-reﬂect. It is tricky because I can’t say definitively that I am any of them comprehensively.

This may sound like a bit of a bad thing but I see it a bit diﬀerently. These love languages (words of affirmation, acts of service, receiving gifts, quality time and physical touch) are a lot like farming. To be a farmer, I find that you can’t be a master of one specific attribute. I am a shepherd, mechanic, drone operator, heavy machinery driver, plumber, electrician and vet all rolled into one. Same can be said about these ‘Love Languages’.

When I use words of affirmation I mean them wholeheartedly. I will make the bed and set the table if I’m not cooking. I have a terrible memory for dates and events, so I will probably forget your birthday once or twice in the course of history (I would forget it’s Christmas if it weren’t for the Mariah Carey on the radio) however if there is an idea for a gift, artwork or something I see that is 1000% you in a store I will never hesitate to make it or buy it.

Spending quality time is something that comes natural, if in love.. that general interest in each other (I reckon communication plays a big part here… we may have discovered which love language I am most suited..).

Finally, physical touch. I’m not going to dive into the nitty gritty of the horizontal disco, nor am I going to pretend that this isn’t something that crosses the mind when speaking about love and relationships. This is much more simpler than that. Hugs, a touch on the shoulder, a hand on your waist, writing secret messages on your back. These are things that have the ability to give me the warm fuzzies incredibly quickly.

11. What qualities do you bring to relationships?

Is this question asking if I can cook? I can.. not well.. but I sure like putting something together that is delicious and nutritious. I especially enjoy making cob loaf. Wait, this is a relationship not a party..

I am a thinker and a listener, so one of the more cerebral qualities I bring is that I will listen, comprehend and engage with what is being presented to me. If I don’t understand, I’ll enquire and question until I do.

I am quite an open-minded man, I am up for most activities and bits and bobs. If you want to travel, yeah sure, let’s travel. If you want to write a book, sweet as, I’ll help if I can. I’m trying to purvey that I am ﬂexible and not rigid in my outlook and if you can construe that into a quality that I bring to a relationship, that would be greatly appreciated.

Furthermore I understand that relationships aren’t all easy paddling. I would be committed to putting the time eﬀort and energy into making a relationship work.

12. What is the most romantic thing you’ve ever done?

I once wrote a lady’s name in sheep and photographed/videoed it from a drone. Might not sound like much but there were 2500 sheep to corral and train to make it happen. I thought it was a really quite nice and romantic gesture however it wasn’t perceived quite like that. Ahh well. Hopefully the most romantic thing I will have done will come out on this program.

13. What values do you pride yourself on most?

Talking about one’s self like this is incredibly awkward, as it’s just a big old toot of the horn. I guess I pride myself on my creativity, loyalty and teamwork. I would say that that I have an ever-present sense of childlike happiness and wonderment in discovery/learning that courses deep within me.

14. Who are you closest to in your family?

My father.

My Dad is a smart dude, and quite knowledgeable about all things farming. He will forever be my farming mentor and I aspire to one day be his farming equal. There isn’t a day that has gone by that I haven’t learnt something from my Dad, whether it be on a farming level or a personal development level. He is a great man in my eyes and I am proud to be his son.

I love my Mum and sister just as much.

15. Do you have any children?

No

16. Would you like to have children? If so, how soon after meeting the right person?

Yes I would like to start a family. Very much so. As to timing, that is a discussion that the right person and I will have to have. I certainly don’t want to wait 20 years to begin. Nor do I want to be fertilising eggs straight oﬀ the bat. A cool, calm and considered approach to starting a family would be my ultimate preference.

17. What is the most interesting thing about you?

Again this is awkward as I feel as though I have tooted my horn quite enough. I would also like a little mystery on this front. What I think is interesting about me could be boring as for you and something that I am unaware of could be the most fascinating aspect to you.

However, as stated above I am incredibly passionate music and general creative goodness. Fusing creative and farm life is something that I find really quite interesting. Whether this is with sheep art or with some drumming in a sheep race with some wooden spoons – or even making a mosaic out of beer bottle tops in the shape of a sheep. Keeping life fun. Finding the little joys in the smallest things.

18. Where would you like to be in five years’ time?

I would like to be happy and healthy with a partner who is equally happy and healthy on the farm. Living our best lives.

PLEASE NOTE: I am acutely aware that this response is corny. It really is true though. Why complicate things any more than necessary. Also, I am getting rather fatigued writing this bio. Short answers, I have decided, are the go.

20. What would you like to say to anyone thinking of applying to meet you?

This questionnaire has taken me a serious amount of time to fill out because I cannot help but think about every word. Spending a day out in the paddock being a glorified shepherd gives me time to think about anything and everything and I do this quite a lot. I think about stuﬀ – from ‘What should I cook for dinner?’ to ‘How much carbon does a whale sequester?’.. nothing is oﬀ limits.

I have to congratulate you on making this far and I hope this bio has given you a glimpse as to who I am. Perhaps I have come oﬀ a little ﬂippant in this bio, but I am incredibly serious about finding love. Finding the right person. If you think you are that person I am quite excited to meet you.
